“She lied. Now she’s blaming the lie on the late, great Abraham Lincoln. That’s one that I’ve– OK, Honest Abe. Honest Abe never lied. That’s the good thing. That’s the big difference between Abraham Lincoln and you. That’s a big, big difference. We’re talking about some difference.”

That’s the quote out of Trump after Clinton was citing Abraham Lincoln’s methodical strategy of passing the 13th amendment. This man has such a narrow understanding of history, it just boggles my mind.

To remove all of the complexity of Abraham Lincoln and chalk it all up to “he never lied” is not only a lie in itself, but a complete injustice to a brilliant man. Lincoln lied all the time, he broke the law. Some of it was means to justify an end, some of it wasn’t. He ended up succeeding at what looked like an impossible task after his last several predecessors sat on their hands.

The point that Clinton was making was that, to get things done, you have to talk to different people in different ways. And he knows that because he does it all the time. If he needs a reminder of how different his private positions are from his public positions, then I suggest he watch a tape that came out last Friday.
