Samuel J. Tilden actually won the popular vote in 1876, despite somehow losing that election (mainly because he didn't fight for it when the Electoral College vote total was being disputed).
Afterward, he said of the election, "I can retire to private life with the consciousness that I shall receive from posterity the credit of having been elected to the highest position in the gift of the people, without any of the cares and responsibilities of the office," a phrase that I hope Hillary Clinton now has embroidered on a pillow or something.
